Breaking Into Tech Stories 1: My Journey from Biochemistry to Data Analysis Chika O., August 12, 2023May 28, 2024 I am a biochemistry graduate. This is an account of how I transitioned into data analysis despite my non-technical background. My tech journey started from searching for gigs on Upwork. At the time, I didn’t know it, but this led me down a rabbit hole that ended in a career in data analysis. Upwork served as a platform where I explored diverse part-time work opportunities. While I was exploring, I noticed a growing demand for Google Analytics (GA) expertise on the website. Though I had a hunch that my path would lead me to work with data, I wasn’t sure how to acquire the necessary skills. Research and conversations with my friends already working in tech convinced me to delve deeper into this field. Youtube came in handy for tutorials. My favourite channel eventually became Julious’s Analytics Mania. His tutorials were detailed and easy to follow. I immersed myself in them as they supplemented my official Google Analytics course. However, as I progressed in my studies, the concepts in the courses became increasingly complex. I realized I had to change my learning strategy to become more structured. The quest for more structure in my study plan led me to discover Alex the Analyst’s channel. Eager to expand my skill set, I enrolled in the data analyst bootcamp hosted on his channel. Under Alex’s guidance, I gained invaluable insight on the fundamental tools for data analysis: SQL, Excel, Tableau/Power BI, and Python. Following his recommended order of learning, I mastered each tool with more ease. On completing the SQL course on Alex’s channel, I sought to increase my expertise in the course on other learning platforms like Mode, w3schools, and SoloLearn. As the saying goes, “Preachers are produced among preachers; doctors are produced among doctors.” Similarly, data analysts thrive within a vibrant community. Recognizing this, I joined data analyst communities to enhance my learning experience and foster valuable connections. TechUp Africa has been an outstanding community for me, offering support and collaboration. Twitter has also proven to be a treasure trove of knowledge and networking opportunities. I connected with industry professionals and engaged in community challenges by searching for and following hashtags such as #DataAnalyst, #DataScience, and #DataFam. Networking with other tech enthusiasts on Twitter helped me get a virtual internship opportunity at KPMG – one of the foremost accounting firms in the world. My time at KPMG gave me practical experience for my resume and significantly improved my chances in job interviews. I replicated my Twitter networking strategy on Telegram and WhatsApp. My network grew. Aside from social media platforms, I found immense value in communities like Kaggle and Github. These platforms provided access to a vast repository of data and information, facilitating collaborative learning and skill development. Participating in events such as the #datacleaningchallenge on Twitter allowed me to connect with like-minded individuals, refine my data skills, and discover various data communities—a truly enriching experience. Within these communities, I got numerous opportunities to obtain certifications in data analysis. Initiatives like the partnership between Junior Achievement Nigeria (JAN) and Coursera granted me scholarships for data analysis courses. That is how I acquired my first certification: Google Data Analytics (GDA). Another partnership between Advance Africa and Access Bank also gave me scholarships for various tech courses on Udacity. These opportunities, which frequently present themselves, epitomize the advantages of active community engagement. In conclusion, my breaking into tech journey, particularly in data analysis, has been incredibly enlightening. What started as a search for Upwork gigs led to learning on various online platforms, joining tech communities, and acquiring certifications. I became a proficient data analyst by embracing opportunities, connecting with fellow analysts, and maximizing available resources. I hope my story inspires aspiring analysts and techies in general. I hope they find encouragement to be steadfast in their respective journeys. Successfully breaking into tech is achievable through curiosity, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to self-improvement.
