Breaking Into Tech Stories 2: How I Became a Software Developer From Accounting Chika O., August 18, 2023May 28, 2024 My journey in the tech industry started in 2019 when I was preparing to relocate to Ghana. The relocation put me in a new environment, and I worried about my career. One day, after voicing my concerns, my partner introduced me to the Python Ghana community. I joined and began exploring my options for a career in tech. During this period, I also had the opportunity to attend a 3-day Introduction to Python event by Developers In Vogue. The event sparked my interest in Python. Through FreeCodeCamp, I learned about web design and Django, a Python web framework. To improve my understanding of the framework, I applied and was accepted as a mentee on Django Girls. I spent a couple of months self-studying with the documentation guide we were given during the training. It was an incredibly hard way to learn as I didn’t know what to focus on. Eventually, I realized I needed more structured guidance and support. So, I started searching for a bootcamp that could give me relevant resources. I found Microverse, a remote learning program that specializes in full-stack software development with real-life applications. I applied and was thrilled to be accepted. I was on my way to becoming a full-stack software engineer! In the program, I learned web development with Ruby on Rails, HTML, Bootstrap, CSS, peer programming, and some soft skills. I also met some incredible people with whom I still stay in touch today. After my first six months, I applied and was accepted for my first internship as a software engineer at Ghana Tech Lab. During this time, I honed my networking abilities and actively engaged in the communities I joined. Attending networking events exposed me to open-source software (OSS). It was not long before I made my first contribution to Cookie-cutter – a third-party Python package. I also had the privilege of serving as a Django Girls mentor and volunteer at the inaugural Pycon Africa. Shortly after giving birth to my son, I received a LinkedIn message from one of the people in my network regarding a graduate trainee opening. This opportunity exposed me to front-end web development with React, and I learned how to build full-stack applications with complete authentication and authorization. Immediately after the training, I secured an internship and my first junior role as a Technical Program Manager at ChipperCash. I want to emphasize the importance of community in getting referrals. After losing my job at Chipper Cash in February (at the peak of job cuts in tech ), I got many gigs through referrals from my network. Actively contributing to open-source software has helped improve my skills significantly. I am currently participating in a community challenge on Twitter called #100daysofOSS. My tech journey has its share of ups and downs, but I’m immensely grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given. I owe my successes to the community members, networks, and friends I’ve made along the way, who made this incredible breaking into tech journey possible.
